| 4-25-06:
Sally Hughes, of the UC Berkeley Bancroft Library Regional Oral History Office,
has completed "UCs
Sagehen Creek Field Station at Fifty, a compilation of interviews conducted
during the 50th Anniversary Reunion in 2004. * * * 10-5-04:
Read some press
about the reunion (great pictures, too!). 8-23-04: The
last of the 50th Anniversary Reunion visitors left this morning. What
a great event! It was wonderful to meet all the Sagehen alumni from the early
days of the station, see their photos & hear their stories. It has helped
us get a better sense of the amazing impact their work--done in very difficult
circumstances--had & continues to have on public land management policies. The
event was also an awesome opportunity for the current partners to get together
to learn a bit about other efforts & interested parties. It will be interesting
to see the effects of this synergy in the coming months. Some things we have already
seen include a great article
in the San Francisco Chronicle. We continue to see phenomenal support from
Beth Burnside, the UC Berkeley Vice Chancellor for Research. She brought the entire
staff to the reunion & just provided us with additional facilities funding
for a faculty cabin. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy
schedules to be a part of this historic Sagehen event! *
* * As you may know, Sagehen recently passed its 50th year. We thought it
would be fun & productive to throw a birthday party and invite all the old
and new friends to visit, see the renewed facilities & share their stories
& experiences! Participants will include Sagehen alumni, community groups,
local agencies, university personnel & anyone else who'd like to attend.
The 'Sagehen Creek Field Station 50th+ Anniversary Reunion' is scheduled
for August 19-22, 2004. Mark your calendars and send us contact info for anyone
you know who might be interested but whom we may have missed! Anyone with an interest
in helping out with the event should contact Station Manager, Jeff
Brown. Now that we have the resources to do so, we are hoping to document
& record Sagehen's history by finding photos, datasets, study plots &
CVs for Sagehen alumni, as well as recording oral histories. Please contact us
if you would like to contribute.

Travel & Lodging Logistics...
Reno,
Nevada has a regional airport with regular service from many points. All the major
car rental agencies are there as well. Lodging is available on-site at Sagehen,
including limited ADA-accessible spaces & bathrooms. Except for limited faculty
spaces, Sagehen accomodations are bunkhouse-style (separate boys & girls cabins!)
& are now heated; communal bath houses were recently upgraded & include
toilets, sinks & showers. Camping is available both at Sagehen & at the
USDA Forest Service Sagehen Campground (1.5 miles up the road). - Sagehen
lodging/camping rate: $10/person per night on a first come, first served basis.
For
those who prefer to stay in a hotel, most major chains and many casinos can be
found in Reno. Reno is a 30-45 minute drive from the Station on good highways. The
communities on the shore of Lake Tahoe also have many, many private & chain
hotels but travel time will be longer over smaller, often congested roads. The
closest lake communities are Tahoe City & King's Beach. Truckee is about
10 miles away from Sagehen on good roads. Lodging choices are fewer in Truckee,
but here are a few: - Holiday Inn Express (530-582-9999)
- River
Street Inn (530-550-9290)
- The Truckee Hotel (530-587-4444)
See area map for overview. Be certain to contact
the station before arrival for the current gate lock combination!
