The roof problem
During Truckee River Day 2003, volunteers replaced the snow level Fish House tar roof-shingles with metal flashing, resolving regular ice damage during the winter. They also rebuilt the block side wall of the channel, excavated a fail-safe for ice dams & trenched for ethernet cable.
Accumulated junk stored in the Fish House was cleaned out & the fish-cam installed in spring 2004. The channel was reconfigured & restricted at both ends. Native & endangered Lahontan Cutthroat Trout were reintroduced as part of a study in summer 2004.

Apartment door under eaves.

Originally built primarily as a summer facility, many design features at Sagehen have proven challenging during the winter months.

In 2003 & 2004, we moved the doors of the Garage Apartment & the West-Wing (Cook's Quarters) to the ends of the buildings. This avoids the massive snow drifts that accumulate under sliding roof eaves, complicating winter access to these spaces. We also replaced the inefficient windows.

All of the new buildings have been oriented north-south, to prevent the shifting roof loads--through differential snow accumulation & sliding--that have racked & damaged our structures in the past.

Most wood stoves were removed during construction & new propane heaters installed. This change reduces fire hazard, allows realistic winter use & opens up more living space in the cabins.

Cramped & run down old kitchen

The Group Kitchen had outlived its usefulness by spring of 2004 when it was completely gutted and modernized with commercial-grade design & equipment, including all new plumbing, electrical, windows & doors.

Rotting floor structure was replaced & reinforced, & a new metal roof installed. A large rodent population was forcibly ejected & the new design minimizes opportunities for their return!
