This semester-long field course brings 27 students from across the UC system to selected UCNRS reserves–including Sagehen–each spring, summer and fall. The course teaches students how to conduct independent field studies, and their research sometimes turns up really interesting things.
For instance, student research projects in summer, 2018 suggested that the Sagehen Forest Project thinning treatments have reduced stress in Jeffrey Pines located in the treated units. Another project discovered that some of the tiny Lodgepole pine saplings encroaching into the Mason Fen are almost 50 years old!
