The California Ecology and Conservation (CEC) semester-long field course brings 27 students from across the UC system to selected NRS reserves – including Sagehen – each spring, summer, and fall. Students complete a series of research projects, learn field techniques, and present findings in oral, poster, and written formats. They hone research, public speaking, and scientific writing skills while gaining familiarity with California’s ecosystems.
One research project from the Summer 2018 program suggested that the Sagehen Forest Project thinning treatments have reduced stress in Jeffrey Pines located in the treated units. Another project discovered that some of the tiny Lodgepole pine saplings encroaching into the Mason Fen are almost 50 years old!
