Fees

Please note: Our station fees have been updated as of Jan 1, 2022. See below for details

Overview

Dear station users of past, present, and future: we are updating our visitor fees to take effect on January 1, 2022. Our goal is to make Sagehen an accessible and affordable field station while also being sustainable in terms of our budget, which like that of many programs, departments, and field stations, is ever-shrinking. Although we are changing our fees, we are also updating how we work with people and groups to meet our fees. Below is an outline of our updated fee structure, discounts, cancellation policy, and how we will work with visitors to meet our fees.

Changes of note

  • We are suggesting that day users pay for their use on the site. The reasoning behind this choice is that day visitors utilize many station resources, including the road, water, bathrooms, and wifi. Please consider writing these fees into your next grant.
  • Discounted rates will now apply to groups (10+ people), long-term users (10+ contiguous days), Tribal Members and US Forest Service employees
  • We’re launching the Sagehen Collaborative Funding Effort and Sagehen Work-Stay Program to help visitors that cannot afford our increased fees.

Group and Long-Term User Discounts

Any groups with 10+ people, or any users staying for 10+ nights in a row will receive a 20% discount on their stay.

Group cancellation policy

We understand that life and weather can be unpredictable, however, scheduling stays at the station for visitors takes time, effort, and can preclude us from scheduling other visitors to the station. Therefore, we ask that any groups (>10 people) cancelling their stay within 2 weeks of their arrival will be asked to pay 10% of fees, and groups cancelling within 1 week of their planned arrival to pay 20% of fees. We thank you for your understanding.

How we will work with you to meet our fees

  1. Sagehen Collaborative Fundraising Effort

We will work with you/your group to meet our increased fees. To do this, we will work collaboratively with you to fundraise to meet the amounts that you will not be able to cover outright. We can do this by co-writing grants with you, or providing letters of collaboration or support for grants you apply for. In order to get a discounted rate for your visits to Sagehen, we ask that you contact us 8 months before your planned stay with a list of grants that we can talk about working on together. Please see a list of grants that might be applicable to apply for on our Finding Funding page, and contact the station manager at sagehen@berkeley.edu so we can plan our co-funding journey.

  1. Sagehen Work-Stay Program

We understand that a lot of visitors have limited funding, may not qualify for certain grants, or may not have enough time in advance to secure funding before their stay. Therefore, we are launching the Sagehen Work-Stay Program. In this program, individuals that can provide evidence of lack of funding/funding access will be able to access the station at discounted rates if they agree to a work-stay trade. Work-Stay partners will work with the manager to build a Work-Stay contract, which will include 1-2 hours of station service for each night of stay depending on the task. Tasks to be completed by Work-Stay partners include deep cleaning of cabins and common areas, digitizing historical data and documents, helping the steward with data collection and maintenance tasks, etc. We are also open to ideas that Work-Stay partners have for projects that can improve the station (e.g. informational signs, outreach, etc.). Please get in touch with the station manager to be considered for the program: sagehen@berkeley.edu. Please note that the number of Work-Stay Partners will be limited each season, so please get in touch with us earlier rather than later.
